I recently bought a Nikon FE in an effort to force myself into re-familiarising myself with manual photography, so here are some photos from the first roll of film I shot. I haven't shot film in at least 4 years, and I limitted myself to things in and around the house, so don't expect much.

PS: I know what you're all thinking, this girl loves f/1.8. and yeah, I do. I have a tendency to just leave it there and never change it, but I plan on growing out of this habit.

here is what I worked on for my final for desma 21.

my initial final project. i finished with this super early and vasa had me do another one, which resulted in the piece below.

my final project that i ended up turning in. vasa said it was my best work to date. this piece came about when i was quickmasking part of the image in photoshop, and vasa commented that it worked really well, so i went about recreating the way it looked in illustrator. with the image on its own, it felt like it lacked something, so i placed the image behind it to frame it.

frankly, i don't see the greatness in my final piece yet, but vasa said that he hoped i would one day. i had a tough time letting go of my first project, since i had spent a lot of effort on it. vasa gave me a little lecture on how i needed to not get attached to works, and be more assertive, since good work should win out. he provided the building of his house as an example; he wanted the bathroom a certain way, and had the plan work around it, but the architect pointed out that the rest of the house suffered because of the bathroom, and he was adamant about the bathroom at first, but finally realised what the architect was saying. vasa pointed out that with the first piece, i was off to a good start (the pink rings around the face) but became stagnant when i was desperate to just fill the piece with something, and it suffered because of it. the final piece was finished as an accident, and i only started it when i was told i couldn't sit around for two hours and forty five minutes doing nothing. i was really reluctant to drop this in the class folder, as it took me less than ten minutes to finish, and i just didn't like the idea of turning it in when i'd spent so much more time and effort on the first piece. i understood what vasa was trying to say, though, and dropped this in the print folder. i wish i had the printed version, but vasa kept it. he said that i should have it printed for myself. maybe if i keep staring at it, i'll see what he sees in it.

Refused Are Fucking Dead: a documentary

Some screencaps from one of my favourite documentaries, Refused Are Fucking Dead by ex-Refused guitarist Kristofer Steen. It's a short but intense documentary, clocking in at just under 40 minutes (excluding the special features - live performance and music videos). It leaves you energised and yearning for more, much like Refused's album The Shape of Punk to Come.

It's worth watching at least once, if only to watch the demise (or rather the explanation of the demise) of one of the best punk bands of all time, through a somewhat stylised lens.

I would like to point out that this came out 5 years ago, and was probably made 6 years ago, which is why Dennis has the long hair. I remember finding it on the shelf at Best Buy, a week before it was officially released. I have a hard time believing that was 5 years ago.

note: I didn't cap any of the live performances or interviews in the documentary.

So, something arrived in the mail for me today. It's amazing, the embroidered silk case, the seed embedded paper, the photos...it also plays Lady Gaga's "Speechless" every time you open it, which I guess was her contribution to this "collaboration." And a photo of her with the lyrics from "Speechless."

I took the plunge and made my first Cire Trudon purchase the other day at Barneys in SF. And I don't regret it one bit. I'd been waiting for that day, and after so much pondering and smelling, I bought Dada.

With a touch of tea and vetiver, dressed up with crumple mint leaves and eucalyptus, this clever scent confuses the mind. Sharp and expansive, it opens us to the magnetic field of the Dada movement, to the artistic dizziness and surrealist experiences.

My sister says it smells like green tea. I think it smells like heaven.

A Personal Bit

I haven't been updating much and I don't talk about my life much on here, but I wanted to share the fact that I graduated from high school on June 3rd, and will be attending UCLA in the fall.

The end of high school marks the end of a chapter in my life, but I look forward to the beginning of a new one. I am excited and somewhat terrified.

And since it's summer, hopefully I will be updating more often!

This is one of my favourite photos (if not my absolute favourite) that I've taken. It was taken in Paris last year. I can't believe it's been almost a year since my trip already! There are so many things I love about this photo. The lines, the contrast, the greys, the bright blue of the windows, the lamps, the doorways, the sunwashed white wall on the left, the light ceiling of the hall, the dark grey of the ground, and most of all, the guy sitting there, smoking, talking on the phone. Had his posture and position been different, if he were crouching or standing, I probably wouldn't like this photo so much.

So, I saw one of my favourite bands last weekend. They're this little British band called Muse. You've probably heard of them. Anyway, here are some photos that my dad took. Not the greatest, and some are a bit blurry, but the blurry ones are a bit abstract and I like it.

Refused Are Fucking Dead

I watched the documentary for the first time in a long, long time. It was nice. Hard to believe it came out in 2006.

If you've never seen the documentary, you're missing out. It's wonderful. It's bittersweet and nostalgic, and quite stunning visually. It narrates the demise of Refused wonderfully. Steen did such a good job with it. The only flaw I find in it is its length. It's 38 minutes and way too short. I highly suggest watching it even if you're not a Refused fan.

Thomas Dozol's Entre Temps

Thomas Dozol's Entre Temps finally opened on January 7th at Envoy Enterprises, after three years in the making. What was "I'll Be Your Mirror" has been expanded and has manifested into "Entre Temps" (At least that's what I think). The process was documented, in part, on his blog.

It all started with the landscape of the flushed skin, the blood rushing to the surface, creating patterns both involuntary and singular. I wanted to capture people raw and unguarded: looking in the mirror at the red triangles marking my cheeks after a long shower, I knew I had found my direction. By allowing me into the intimacy of their bathroom, my subjects have already let their guard down. I then tried to disappear as much as possible, to let rituals unfold undirected and find those fleeting moments of purity when one still feels washed anew.

Tonight is Gustavo's debut conducting the LA Philharmonic! At the Hollywood Bowl! I've been very excited (almost to the point of giddyness!) about this and his arrival. Dudamania has hit LA pretty hard. If you live in LA I'm sure you've seen all the signs on lampposts, buses, billboards etc that feature his face and a word in Spanish such as BIENVENIDO or PASION.

I would have love to have gone, but the free tickets were gone in minutes. And scalpers were trying to sell them for $1600! If you, like me, are unable to make it, you can watch the stream online here. Or if you're not doing anything tonight, I highly suggest you make yourself comfortable in front of your computer and watch.

The night will end with fireworks after Beethoven's Ode to Joy!

I found out about Michael Berger a while ago, flipping through a book of contemporary jewelry (while Elisha was gushing over a magazine with Gael Garcia Bernal on the cover), at the fashion bookstore at CMC. I was completely enamoured with his "kinetic jewelry". I'd never seen anything like it! I was excited and seriously intrigued. I wish I could wax poetic about it all, but since I'm such a terrible writer, I will spare you. And I think these rings can pretty much speak for themselves.

I absolutely LOVE these little GIFs on his website.

His "static jewelry" isn't bad either.

My absolute favourite detail about his rings is that each one has a flat base, so it can stand still on its own, like a perfect little sculpture.

Here are a couple of videos I found on YouTube. One is a feature on Michael Berger, that actually shows him making a ring in his studio, and a sort of interview. TOO BAD I DON'T UNDERSTAND A WORD OF GERMAN! The other is one of his rings in movement.

I particularly love the video that shows the process of producing a ring. The workmanship that goes into a single piece is incredible.

I am home! It's weird waking up in my own bed. I feel like I've been gone for such a long time. I'm glad I'll be in one place for a while. London, Paris, and New York will be missed though. I miss the feeling of being somewhere unfamiliar and unexplored.

I will update with photos from Paris soon, I promise!

Sister's Prada "watch"

This lady was dressed FABULOUSLY. I loved that she wore pearl earrings.

IDK if you can see, but her heels had a section of what looked like bamboo in them. Super neat. Loved her whole look. Cropped bleached hair, bright bag, printed jacket, interesting heels.

I couldn't get a good picture of the guy but he looked so good. Loved the mix of blues and greens and the way his bags matched.

I believe they were a couple. A very cute and stylish one at that.

Okay every thought I had about how blegh Paris has been has now been purged from my mind. My day was freaking MADE today on my way back to the hotel from the Jardin des Tuileries and the Louvre. So, what exactly made my day? Oh, idk, I just MET RICK OWENS. AND MICHELLE LAMY.

We (my sister and I. Mother doesn't really count) didn't just MEET them.

So, we're walking across the Seine, and I see two incredibly striking people who stuck out like a sore thumb walking ahead of me. The woman, petite, turns her head a bit, and I recognise her as Michelle Lamy. AND THEN, I REALISE, WELL, WHO ELSE WOULD BE WALKING WITH MICHELLE LAMY? RICK OWENS, DUH. I yelled over to my sister who was walking in front of them, to turn around. She didn't know wtf (she thought I was referring to a family dressed in Livestrong yellow) I was talking about until she ran over and I told her Rick freaking Owens was in front of us. Cue me fangirling like crazy, and working up the nerve to ask him to sign my Simple Diary. I tell him I absolutely love his clothes, etc. He asked my name, I am so incredibly flustered at this point I'm most likely shaking. He said he didn't know what he was supposed to write and wrote "Hi" and put little hearts.

Then, we're still walking back to our hotel, freaking the fuck out because they were behind us and stopped to buy candy, I keep bugging my sister to work up the courage to ask them for a picture, before we reach our street and they go off in another direction. Well, they stopped to cross on OUR street. My sister finally gets the courage to ask them for a picture. So my mom takes a picture of us four, and then we cross the street, and they're crossing the street, and I make a note of how stalkerish it is, even though we weren't stalking them. Then Mr. Owens starts a conversation and asks us where we're going, and when we tell them just down the street, he asks "Rue de Bourgogne?" Oui, Mr. Owens, near the Pierre Hardy store. And he says "That's where we live! At the Pierre Hardy store, next to it." My sister would like to note he was eating candied peanuts. He asks if we're visiting on vacation, where we're from, what we did today, etc. When he asked where we were from I was like "Los Angeles.......where you're from..." and I was just like FACE, MEET PALM. He asked us what we did and we told him about going to the Louvre and getting lost, to which he replied "That's a long day." God I sounded so incredibly stalkerish. But he and Michelle were very very nice and advised us to visit the Assemblee Nationale shop on the corner, and how there are lots of interesting shops on our street, the art+ furniture shops, etc. We reached their door, and Michelle pointed out their place had trees in the windows. We said our goodbyes and my sister and I thanked them numerous times.

I DON'T EVEN CARE THAT I LOOK LIKE SHIT. I MET RICK OWENS OK.

I don't think I've ever been so starstruck in my life. My sister says giggly. Also I left out lots of little details but I'm still a bit too dazed to recount them. And please excuse the quality of the pictures, they were taken with my mom's camera. I have a few pictures of them walking but my sister says that's a bit too weird.

Airplanes suck. Airplane food sucks even more. 10 hours of boring misery. Oh well. Saw a ton today thanks to very kind and cool shuttle driver. It's currently 9:25 PM and the sky is still sort of light. Waiting for it to get dark so the whole city can be twinkling in lights. The view from my room is absolutely stunning!

Here are some of my pieces from last school year. They're not the whole piece since my scanner is smaller than each of the pieces.

Sasha from Balenciaga SS07. Charcoal + soft pastel. Too bad you can't see the chainmail dress! I think I really got the texture of it down. The pastel STILL comes off it. My fingertips are black!

Balenciaga FW08 heels. Charcoal + pencil. There are actually two more pairs that got cut off. The pair in the center are from jak&jil. This is has been through a beating.

CDG SS09. Oil on canvas panel. These are actually 11" x 14". They're just cut off. I like these a lot. I really wanted to capture the impressions of these giant wigs. I loved how they functioned as both hair and make-up.

Rodarte SS09 dresses. Colour pencil + pen on paper. It's less saturated in real life, and the blacks are darker. And the shading is much nicer. I think this is the most recent one. I really wished I could have somehow included the rhinestones, but with colour pencil, it's just not going to happen. I'm thinking about doing the whole collection like this.

I asked Reggie if he'd scan these for me so hopefully I can post the WHOLE pieces.
